It has become apparent that the microbes outnumber human cells within an individual. At least virus-like particles are estimated to be present per gram of human feces, representing the gut virome. Evidences are emerging to support that the gut virome has medical relevance as it plays an important role in human health and physiology.
Earlier studies have indicated a need to examine the diversity of gut virome in additional distinct populations. One of our aims is to create an in-depth inventory of viruses present in the distal gut of Indian population. It is of interest for devising rational approaches to develop therapeutics as well as identify biomarkers for conditions such as inflammatory gut conditions, metabolic syndromes, colorectal cancer and diseases of the central nervous system that are associated with gut microbiome dysbiosis. In addition, our interest is to look for novel viruses and viral proteins for bio-prospecting. Our approaches mainly involve shotgun sequencing of the nucleic acids purified from fecal virus-like particles (VLPs) and total fecal DNA followed by bioinformatics analyses.
To be able to fully harness the therapeutic, diagnostic and biotechnological potential of the human gut virome, there is also a need to reveal and characterize the functionality encoded by the gut viruses. Our other aim is to map the functional landscape of the gut virome and understand the molecular mechanisms by which the newly identified viruses/phages found in the human gut interact with the host. We are also investigating the host interaction of the pathogenic human viruses, SARS-coronavirus and chikungunya virus. It involves bioinformatics and experimental approaches.
